Amount: $5,000

Adil Adatia (Lethbridge)

Southern Alberta is faced with numerous environmental challenges, two of which are increasing: water shortages and declining biodiversity. The Environmental Club at Winston Churchill High School in Lethbridge plans to address both of these issues at once as they take advantage of an abandoned courtyard space at their school.

YES Grant funds will help Adil Adatia and the Environmental Club establish a drought tolerant garden in the courtyard, aimed also at attracting Monarch butterflies. This garden will serve as a model to educate students and community members about water conservation and drought tolerant gardening.

Additionally, the courtyard will act as a way-station in the Monarch Watch Program that tracks migration and promotes student-scientist partnerships in butterfly research.
