Major Project Grant
Year: 2010 Cycle: Spring Amount: $30,000 Visit grantee's website Monitoring Director: Peter Zimmerman Sierra Club of Canada Based on the release of recent scientific research conducted by the province, conservationists believe it is time for concerted action to ensure the long term viability of the grizzly bear in Alberta. Action Grizzly Bear (GB) addresses a major gap in the collective activities of the conservation community to date. A program of focused advocacy for provincial decision makers, Action Grizzly Bear will engage 1200 participants to: 1) generate the political will to finally list the grizzly as a threatened species under Alberta’s Wildlife Act; 2) address two current political impediments to listing and recovery -- i.e., the perceived cost of grizzly bears to the livestock industry and the assumption that grizzlies crossing from from British Columbia into Alberta alleviate the urgent need for recovery action in Alberta; and 3) develop a public report card that tracks government progress on grizzly conservation. |
