The Athabasca Watershed Council is the tenth Watershed Planning and Advisory Council (WPAC) created under Alberta's Water For Life Strategy.   The Athabasca Watershed Council (AWC-WPAC) mission is to promote, foster respect and plan for an ecologically healthy watershed by demonstrating leadership and facilitating informed decision-making to ensure environmental, economic and social sustainability.  The Athabasca Watershed Council was officially formed November 28, 2009 and became designated WPAC in February 2010.

Under Alberta's Water For Life Strategy, the AWC-WPAC is required to research and produce an Athabasca State of the Watershed Report as a foundation to an Athabasca Watershed - Integrated Watershed Management Plan (IWMP).    The AWC-WPAC values inclusivity, consensus decision-making, and is committed to active engagement of all sectors and communities in the Athabasca Watershed on the journey to a completed IWMP.
