TechSoup Canada: Solutions for the Technologically ChallengedDec 01, 2009
TechSoup Canada's Coordinator, Jane Zhang, talked about the organization at the recent Alberta Ecotrust River Rally, and it quickly became apparent that TechSoup has a lot to offer for registered Canadian nonprofits and charities. Aside from great deals (like a fully licensed version of Microsoft Office 2007 for $18.00) on some types of hardware and a wide range of software from companies like Cisco, Symantec, Adobe and Microsoft, the organization offers well-grounded advice on developing information technology strategies and suggestions as to what hardware and applications will work best for your organization's specific needs. At River Rally, Jane discussed all of the above, delved into the pros and cons of using social media, and even took the time to fix participants' ailing laptops and failing cell phones. Alberta Ecotrust Filling the Environmental Funding GapJun 11, 2009 What do bears, bicycles, and energy-efficient buildings have in common? What about the boreal forest and water stewardship? Sour gas research, parks planning, and behavior change? All of them are the focus of projects championed by Alberta environmental organizations that were recently awarded grants from Alberta Ecotrust totaling approximately $150,000. Selected from among 22 proposals by a committee comprising partners from the corporate and environmental NGO sectors, the eight projects that received grants all address pressing environmental concerns. For the first time in 12 years, for example, the Province is considering changes to the way it allocates water - who gets it, how much of it, and when. Taking advantage of the opportunity, Water Matters, a provincial water stewardship group, developed a program to increase the water awareness of Albertans and encourage their participation in upcoming public consultations. The project received a grant of $28,500, which, says executive director Danielle Droitsch, "will allow us to advance common sense proposals to conserve healthy water flows and meet basic human water needs." Youth Environmental Stewardship (YES) Grants AnnouncedApr 20, 2009 In early March 2009, the Alberta Ecotrust Foundation awarded 11 projects worth $54,150 under this program. The YES program, sponsored by Alberta Environment, awards funding to youth 16 to 30 to develop and nurture envrionmental leadership in youth throughout the province. One project that received a $5,000 grant was My world, My choice!. As Kurt Archer, YES grant recipient, explains "sustainability is a beacon that reminds us that individuals CAN and DO make change possible. So what better idea than to empower the youth to start making those changes today?" Alberta Ecotrust Supports The Alberta Water Learning Network LaunchApr 18, 2009 In early June, the Sustainability Network is organizing the inaugural gathering of the Alberta Water Learning Network. From noon on Monday, June 1 to early afternoon Wednesday, June 3, at Rundles Mission just outside Edmonton, current and emerging NGO water leaders will convene to focus on exploring the resource capacity challenges of the sector. The program will draw heavily on the experience and knowledge of the participants as well as provide training on fundraising (Ken Wyman), various thinking tools (facilitator Dr. Charlotte Young), an evening speaker (Andrew Nikiforuk) and panelists (RBC, Max Bell Foundation, TD, Alberta Ecotrust) to develop a collective understanding about this complex issue. The program addresses the unique circumstances and perspectives of the environmental community and a key requisite of the program is nesting the learning back into the culture and practice of participating organizations. FT Services joins Alberta EcotrustApr 15, 2008 Alberta Ecotrust partners welcome newest member, FT Services, into their unique partnership of environmental groups and corporations that work side by side to facilitate positive environmental change at the community level. FT Services provides operational and maintenance support to the oil and gas, petrochemical, mining and mineral processing and power generation industries in the Canadian market. "Corporations continue to recognize the importance of leadership in environmental stewardship, especially in communities where they operate, even amidst a slowing economy. Alberta Ecotrust welcomed three new corporate partners in 2008 and if January is any indication, 2009 shows no sign of slowing down," says Pat Letizia, executive director of Alberta Ecotrust. previous 10 • top • next 10 |
